'The Dream Under The Mango Tree' by Abdou Dampha

Introducing a heartfelt narrative by Abdou Dampha, a promising medical student whose journey began under a mango tree in Jarjari village, The Gambia. Abdou's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering support of the Morgan Clark Foundation.

I just cannot imaging the happiness, seeing myself writing about the dream under the mango tree and the same time my heart bleeds knowing that even the might of a pen cannot express gratitude towards those that had participated in bringing the dream to the reality.  Kebba Marong, Bakary Jammeh and Phil and Gina Morgan, these selfless people are rare in every generation.

I do not have the ability to write  all kindness and love shown by these selfless people in past years till now, I could only wrote about my part and those I bear witness.

Jarjari Village

In the heart of the North Bank Region of The Gambia lies the humble village of Jarjari. A picturesque but unremarkable place on the surface, Jarjari harbors a wellspring of dreams, hopes, and heartache buried beneath its fertile soil. For years, education eluded the children of this village, who learned their Arabic (Islam teachings), ABCs, arithmetic, and dreams under the sprawling shade of an ancient mango tree. Yet, the story of how a school was built in this village is not just a tale of bricks and mortar; it is a story about love, community, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of humanity.

The Mango Tree (A Classroom Of Hope)

For years, the children of Jarjri gathered beneath the mango tree, where the sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the eager faces of young learners. It was here that they spent their days, engaging in laughter and play, while also tackling the rigors of learning. However, a makeshift classroom under a tree could never truly replace a formal education. Their dreams felt distant, just like the clouds that drifted overhead, often out of reach.

The journey began under the rustling branches of a sprawling mango tree, where children huddled together, fingers stained with ink and souls thirsty for knowledge.

Kebba Marong, a native of Jarjari, stood at the helm as their teacher—a role he embraced with fervor and selflessness. While the world around him was evolving, he remained steadfast, dedicating his life to imparting education in a village where schools were merely an unattainable dream. Kebba was a beacon of hope, embodying compassion and commitment, weaving lessons not just from textbooks, but also from the rich culture and dreams of his village. The children adored him, their laughter mingling with the leaves, as they gathered under the tree. They sang, learned, and grew together, a symphony of innocence playing out against the backdrop of lush green fields.

Parents, with tired eyes and weather-worn hands, watched as their children struggled for a future that seemed perpetually just beyond their grasp. The village had a vision, and that vision was destined to take shape with the arrival of a compassionate heart — a man named Bakary Jammeh. BAKARY JAMMEH (Catalyst Of Change)

Bakary Jammeh, a native of Jarjari, had lived in Kololi but carried the village's spirit in his heart. He traveled back to his roots not just with nostalgia but with a fierce determination to rewrite the narrative for the children of Jarjri.

The Arrival Of Phil And Gina Morgan

In 2009, a glimmer of hope arrived in the form of Bakary Jammeh, a native of Jarjari who had settled in Kololi. Backed by the passionate duo Phil and Gina Morgan from Britain, Bakary's commitment to his roots drove him to return to the village with a promise—a promise that one day, an actual school would stand where children once learned beneath the mango tree. Phil and Gina Morgan demonstrated that compassion knows no borders.

What unfolded was a moment of serendipity — an evening of storytelling filled with conviction and emotion that ignited a shared purpose in all of them.

“Every child deserves an education,” Bakary said, his voice trembling yet resolute. “We cannot let the next generation grow up without knowing the power of knowledge.”

Phil and Gina Morgan were moved beyond words; they realized they had the opportunity to change lives. By the time their visit ended, they promised Bakary that they would return to help build a school in Jarjari. In their hearts, they felt a profound connection to the village and its children, a feeling that can only be described as love at first sight.

Birth of Morgan Clark School

A silent revolution was taking place. It wasn’t marked by grand proclamations or the noise of machinery; instead, it was the quiet determination of a few individuals that inspired the hearts of many.

As the community watched the construction unfold, an air of excitement enveloped Jarjari. The villagers came together, their hearts emboldened by the thought of a dedicated space for learning—raising hope higher than the branches of the mango tree.

By early 2010, construction commenced. The sight of bricks being laid, cement being poured, and laughter echoing through the village brought joy to the hearts of the residents. Jarjari was abuzz with optimism and anticipation. More than a building was being constructed; hope was being erected.

On February 10, 2011, the dream materialised into reality, the school was officially opened.

This moment bore witness to tears of joy, as parents hugged their children tightly, whispering promises of a brighter future. It was the culmination of tireless efforts and a testament to the power of collaboration. The mango tree, once a makeshift classroom, stood witness to the monumental transition. Futures were no longer confined beneath its branches, they soared toward the horizon of knowledge.

Fortune on the village

Morgan Clark Foundation did not just build the school in Jarjari. Jarjari village had recognition in many places.

The foundation created job opportunities for both young and adult, educated or not, when Morgan Kunda Lodge was constructed.

Tragic turn

However, fate has a way of intertwining joy with sorrow. The bittersweet reality of life cast a shadow over Jarjari shortly after their dream began to take tangible shape.

Kebba Marong, the selfless teacher who had sacrificed so much for his students, tragically passed away shortly after the school’s opening. The void left in the hearts of the children was immense. His absence was felt deeply, and while his physical presence was lost, his spirit lingered in the classrooms he had loved. The children mourned in silence.

Despite the sadness, they were determined to honor his legacy, promising to cherish the lessons he had imparted and strive to make him proud. The school became a testament not just to ambition, but to the love and sacrifices made by those who came before them.

Hope On The Horizon

In 2013, the compelling story of resilience began to unravel as Jarjari School sat for its first national exams. The anticipation and anxiety hung in the air, but when the results were announced, the heartbeats of the village quickened with joy. Among the first cohort, two outstanding students, Abdou Dampha and Mariama Gassama, emerged as stars.

The Morgan Foundation, in recognition of their dedication and remarkable performance, made a life-changing decision. Abdou and Mariama were chosen for sponsorship to continue their education until university, an opportunity that seemed surreal in a village that once lacked a school and a lifeline that would take them beyond the borders of their small village. Here, love and compassion manifested into action, paving the way for a future that was once unimaginable.

Their journey to Kombo in 2016 marked the beginning of a new chapter; as they prepared to leave their home village, stepping into a world that held untold possibilities.

They left the familiar landscape of Jarjari, filled with hope and fear, but mostly a burning desire to succeed.

Abdou dreamt of becoming a healer of hearts, while Mariama set her sights on law, hoping to champion justice for those who couldn’t fight for themselves.

Ah, the fragrance of dreams! It bloomed beautifully in the hearts of both young students, nurtured by the love and support of the Morgan Foundation and their guardian, Bakary Jammeh, who worked tirelessly to ensure their futures were bright.

Heart Stopping Incident

However, life has a way of challenging even the best-laid plans. In 2018, tragedy struck again. On that fateful day, when Bakary was involved in a severe accident while driving from Jarjari to Kombo, it sent shockwaves through the community and crushed Abdou and Mariama's hearts. The world tilted on its axis, and for a moment, hope flickered dimly.

Hours turned into days, and news trickled in that Bakary had survived the accident, but he was changed. The active, vibrant man who had devoted his life to bettering the lives of others would never be the same. His injuries were profound, and though the threads of his spirit held tightly, part of him felt broken.

Time has an enchanting way of healing, but it can never erase the sorrow. Abdou and Mariama clung to their studies at SOS Herman Gmeiner, and with bolstered determination, they excelled.

In 2022, they graduated from high school, bearing the fruits of their labor and the collective hopes of their village and Morgan foundation as their backbone.

As they donned their caps and gowns, their hearts brimmed with gratitude toward the Morgan Foundation, which had steadfastly supported them throughout their academic journey.

“We did it, Bakary!” they thought, imagining him standing proud, celebrating their victories. But fate, it seemed, was not finished.

Life’s Contractions

Yet, life’s unpredictability loomed as Mariama made a choice that left many bewildered. In a surprising turn of events, she married soon after graduation, seemingly abandoning her ambition of becoming a lawyer. Her decision brought feelings of disappointment to her supporters, including the Morgan Foundation, who had dedicated time and resources to her education. In a world that often demands a choice between love and ambition, Mariama found herself navigating a challenging new chapter.

Though it began as a joyous occasion for many, Abdou felt a heavy heart, mourning the loss of his partner in dreams. He knew how hard Mariama had worked, how much sacrifice had gone into her education, yet understanding her decision was difficult.

As luck would have it, Abdou’s dedication paid off, as he received an acceptance letter from the university, commencing his studies on May 13, 2024. This milestone transcended individual achievement; it was a victory for Jarjari and the Morgan Foundation. Celebrating with friends and family, Bakery’s heart brimmed with pride. His young charges were stepping further into uncharted territory, fulfilling the promises made under the mango tree.

Deep Loss_ Final Goodbyes

When The Day And The Night Became The Same.

Tragically, as joy enveloped the community, it was heartbreaking to see Bakary’s health deteriorating rapidly. He had poured every ounce of love into nurturing his village and advocating for its children, and yet, the fragility of life reminded everyone that time is often cruelly fleeting.

Just when happiness began to feel solid, life struck with unfathomable grief. On July 10, 2024 - Bakary Jammeh passed away, leaving a cavernous void in the hearts of Abdou, Mariama, the villagers, and the Morgan’s. No longer would his laughter echo in the halls of the school he helped build, and the tree that once stood as a landmark of hope now stood as a somber reminder of life's uncertainties. The world lost another compassionate soul, a guiding light for many. Heartbroken and despondent, Abdou struggled to cope with the loss of his guardian, mentor, and friend. Yet in the shadows of grief, Bakary's unwavering belief in education remained alive. Abdou held on to that legacy, channeling his sorrow into a burning determination to honor the life Bakary had lived.

The Morgan foundation (a lifeline)

During this turbulent time, the Morgan Foundation stepped up, embodying the very spirit of love and commitment they had always exhibited. They embraced Abdou as their own, ensuring that he remained supported throughout his academic journey despite the emotional and logistical upheaval caused by Bakery’s death. The foundation continued to provide him with the resources to pursue his dream, reminding him that while life may present challenges, education remains a powerful tool for change.

A future left bright

In the face of overwhelming sorrow, the piercing light from the Morgan Foundation illuminated a pathway for Abdou. They recognized his dreams, working tirelessly to ensure that his education wouldn’t falter, that he would achieve what he set out to do—not just for himself, but for the legacy of those who had supported him.

They ensured that he continued to pursue his studies and emphasized the importance of an education obtained with love and compassion, trusting that it would lead to a better tomorrow.

Abdou took each class with vigor. He carried the spirits of Kebba Marong and Bakary Jammeh with him; they fueled his heart with courage and determination and Morgan foundation as his backbone. Determined as ever, Abdou excelled in his studies, constantly reminding himself that every page he turned was a tribute to the souls that had impacted his journey. He learned that both joys and sorrows could coexist; it was this delicate balance that painted a fuller picture of life.

The Legacy That Lives On/ Ongoing Legacy

Even as the sun set on those who had dedicated their lives to shaping the futures of others, their legacies lived on through the hearts they touched. Every time Abdou walked through the university gates, he felt Kebba's guiding hand, and he could still hear Bakary's gentle encouragement echoing in his mind, urging him to press on.

Abdou promised himself to honor their sacrifices through hard work, dedication, and meaningful contributions to society. He dreamt not just of being a doctor but of being a compassionate healer who would give back to his community and world at large, bridging the gap between despair and hope for those in Jarjari and beyond.

Through every trial and tribulation, he learned that gratitude was the anchor that kept him grounded. Gratitude for the gift of education, the love and sacrifice of his mentors and guardians, and the unwavering support of the Morgan Foundation, which opened doors that had once seemed impossible.

As Abdou nears the completion of his studies, the story of Jarjari Village transforms into a tale of resilience, a testament to the foundation laid by the selfless sacrifices of those like Kebba Marong and Bakary Jammeh and the backbone, Morgan foundation.
